Sustainable management of sports practice towards the socio-ecological regeneration of maritime and coastal areas

Local Action

ReSea Sports is an innovative initiative co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Sports programme. The project is dedicated to promoting sustainable sports management, with a strong emphasis on coastal conservation and the socio-environmental impact of outdoor sports. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, ReSea Sports promotes responsible sporting practices that help preserve and regenerate natural landscapes for future generations.

Background

At its core, ReSea Sports integrates sustainability and regeneration into sports practices, ensuring that environmental conservation is not just a consideration—but a central pillar. The project focuses on the socio-environmental dimensions of marine and coastal sports, aiming to generate a positive impact on both communities and natural ecosystems.

ReSea Sports adopts a regenerative approach, moving beyond sustainability to actively restore coastal areas and strengthen biodiversity. Through innovative environmental actions and stakeholder collaboration, the project strives to regenerate natural habitats, support ecosystem health, and deliver lasting benefits to society and the environment alike.

Drawing inspiration from the principles of Regenerative Tourism, ReSea Sports promotes the idea that sport and physical activity can become catalysts for positive environmental transformation. The project contributes to climate change adaptation, risk prevention, and more resilient coastal ecosystems through better governance and integrated management of coastal sports practices.

Targets

To realize this vision, the Aethnic team—alongside its European partners—has set the following key objectives:

  • Develop and promote new models of sport practice that actively support the regeneration of coastal and marine environments.
  • Advance innovative governance frameworks that enable the widespread adoption of sustainable and regenerative sports practices, with a focus on strong collaboration between public authorities and local stakeholders.
  • Recognize and highlight pioneering practices by engaging with key actors across European coastal regions and creating a network that champions sustainability and regeneration in marine sports.

Future perspectives

As the project evolves, ReSea Sports will develop educational resources, organize community events, and implement regenerative practices that highlight the importance of protecting our coasts. Through awareness-raising and hands-on engagement, the initiative seeks to inspire lasting change—turning marine and coastal sports into powerful tools for environmental restoration and social well-being.
